It’s the brand behind Birmingham Bullring and Grand Central, Leicester High Cross and London Brent Cross.

The challenge

Hammerson was facing a major public backlash over the proposed redevelopment of the Bullring Shopping Centre in Birmingham.

It needed communications support to win the community’s ‘hearts and minds’.

The solution

Messaging: to separate fact from fiction (which had been stoked by media sensationalism).

Stakeholder engagement: a host of influencers were invited to learn and share their views on the plans before detailed planning application was submitted.

As part of this campaign, national coverage was secured including features across broadcast and print including The Times and Daily Mail.

The outcome

The campaign raised the profile of the city and attracted new investment.

The development was regarded as the foundation for the 25-year regeneration plan across the city – including the Eastside regeneration plans.

The campaign successfully secured £1bn investment in Birmingham with a merger between Hammerson, Land Securities and Henderson Global Investors into the Birmingham Alliance, all launched in strict confidentiality with Birmingham City Council.

Communications played an integral role in breaking the planning deadlock between competing property developers and engineer a win/win for every stakeholder in partnership with Birmingham City Council.

The challenge
